About

a place for food lovers, artists, and adventurers

Showcasing the vibrant essence of Latin cooking, Bar Sofia is a paradise for shared plates and cocktails. Bar Sofia playfully nods to traditional Argentinian food as well as the next generation of food lovers, artists, and adventurers.

As you step inside Bar Sofia, you’re greeted with a mix of classic elegance, fresh Latin energy, and the fantastical and surrealist artwork of Rafael Silveira. Infused with a riot of rich colour and greenery, the space transports you to a raucous bohemian barrio full of pop-up art galleries, late-night bars, and street murals. Come spring, Bar Sofia’s expansive patio, complete with a colourful feature wall inspired by Peru’s “Rainbow Mountain”, will offer a lively setting in which to sip and snack the day away.

Highlighting fresh and bright flavours, Bar Sofia’s all-day menu features an array of tasty snacks and small plates including addictive empanadas and colourful salads, alongside meat, seafood, and vegetable dishes meant for sharing among old and new friends. While much of the menu is Latin-inspired, Sofia’s chefs have thoughtfully incorporated beautiful Atlantic Canadian ingredients such as Nova Scotia mackerel, lamb, and salmon, as well as Newfoundland tuna and P.E.I. beef cheeks.

Of course, the bar is as fun as the food! With an emphasis on tequila and mescal, the cocktail-centric menu features margaritas, pisco sours, and sangria, with slushie cocktails on deck for summer. A Latin-leaning wine list offers a variety of approachable and affordable Spanish, Chilean, and Argentinian bottles.

Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum.

Chef Steven Kwon

With more than 20 years of culinary experience, Chef Steven Kwon’s professional journey has taken him across Canada and around the globe.

While studying overseas at the University of Korea, Steven Kwon realized his love for cooking and returned home to Vancouver to pursue culinary arts. After graduating in 2001, he cut his teeth in some of the city’s top fine dining establishments, including Bacchus Restaurant at the Wedgewood Hotel and Elixir Bar & Restaurant in the Opus Hotel. After moving to Toronto, Steven joined acclaimed Chef Lorenzo Losetos’ brigade at George Restaurant. In 2008, he was hired as Chef de Cuisine at Oliver & Bonacini Café Grill, Bayview Village, where he would apply his diverse restaurant experience to execute a wide range of internationally inspired fare.

In 2015, Steven was appointed Executive Chef of R&D, a new restaurant creation of MasterChef Canada winner Eric Chong and judge Alvin Leung. Located in the heart of Toronto’s historic Chinatown, R&D served up a creative tribute to traditional East Asian flavours and beloved Canadian dishes.  In 2016, however, Chef Steven made the decision to move his family to South Korea and pursue new opportunities. He took an Executive Chef Position at Daily, one of Seoul’s largest restaurants and lounges in the famous Gangnam area.

In late 2020, Chef Steven got the call from O&B Corporate Executive Chef Anthony Walsh. O&B was planning an east coast expansion and needed Steven’s leadership skills as part of their exciting new Nova Scotian brigade. Never one to turn down a challenge, Chef Steven jumped at the invitation to join the team in an exciting series of restaurant openings on the Halifax waterfront.

Now, as a District Executive Chef, Steven oversees the culinary operations at several restaurants in Queen’s Marque district including Drift, Bar Sofia, and more to come. And, as a lifelong lover of the ocean, beaches and the fresh salt air, Chef Steven is happy to call Halifax his new home.
